Cleaner Shipping

skibsfart 1170-400

Cleaner Shipping is a partnership between the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and The Danish Shipowners' Association, which aims to reduce air pollution by shipping in Denmark and worldwide.
The partnership was formed in November 2008, following a tightening of standards for Danish and international shipping passed by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in October 2008.

Over half of all particle pollution in Danish cities comes from outside sources, much of it from shipping. With this partnership, The Environmental Protection Agency and The Danish Shipowners' Association wish to ensure that Danish and International shipping fulfils the new standards in Danish and international waters and support activities, research and the development of technology aimed at the reduction of NOx, SOx and particles from the maritime sector.

The Environmental Protection Agency and The Danish Shipowners Association wish to promote cleaner shipping though action aimed at:

  • Focusing attention on the importance of reducing air pollution from shipping by promoting awareness of the new regulations passed by the IMO,
  • ensuring the visibility of these measures,
  • promoting innovative frameworks for environmental/technological development so that the requirements can be fulfilled and participants.

This is a strategic partnership with a potentially long term perspective and focus on efforts to reduce air pollution from shipping.

Background

Pollution from shipping is primarily regulated internationally by the IMO, which is the UN shipping organisation. In October 2008, partly in response to active Danish efforts, the IMO approved a new set of regulations for the emission of NOx and SOx particles from ships.
This has resulted in an ambitious tightening up of regulations and if Denmark is to put into effect the fuel and engine improvements which are a prerequisite for compliance with the regulations, there is a need for environmentally aware companies and authorities to lead the way and work towards bringing concrete technical solutions onto the market.
Danish shipping leads the way environmentally and it is necessary to maintain and develop this position combined with a coordinated pressure to raise global standards with the help of the UN and IMO. The cooperation also gives Denmark a clear advantage in future negotiations on shipping to air emissions with the UN and IMO while at the same time contributing to the reduction in pollution globally.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee comprises The Danish Environmental Protection Agency, The Danish Shipowners' Association and the Danish Maritime Authority. It is expected that a number of other actors will also be included in the work, for example, NGOs and relevant research institutions.
